Last week saw the announcement in Muscat that the world-famous Ironman brand is coming to Oman. This is great news for all parties concerned, and a really exciting step for the sports industry in Oman.
Well done to Mohamed Obaidani (and Tri-Me) who has worked very hard to be the driving force behind bringing the brand to Oman. The power of persistence has really paid off. The hard work will certainly start now.
Great news for the Sultanate; Ironman is a modern phenomenon, with less than 50 years total history, and only really the last 20 seeing global explosion in popularity. The Ironman brand is seen as one of the hardest athletic pursuits in the whole world of sports, and they are fiercely protective of the way that they position their brand and their planning. For Oman to be able to host one of these great global sports brands is a big step forward. Together with the Spartan brand, our own Tough Mudder event, the Tour of Oman, NBO Golf (PGA Tour event) – the growth in global brands coming to Oman is continuing.
It is also great news for Ironman themselves. Oman is a beautiful country that will give the triathletes taking part a great challenge. Oman is set apart in the Middle East as a country with very varied terrain and geography. I am sure Mohamed and his team (of whom Sabco Sports are proud to be a small helping part in the machine) are determined over the next few years to achieve the successful steps that will see Oman host the first and only full distance Ironman event.
For those that don’t know – a Full Ironman is a swim of 2.4-mile (3.9 km), 112-mile (180 km) on your bike (as streamlined as possible), and finishes with a full running marathon of 26.2-mile (42.2 km). A world-class finish time is 8 hours, with 12 hours considered to be about the target for the hard working home athlete, whilst the cut-off is a mind-boggling 18 hours.
Time to start training!
The Ironman Oman schedule is:
Friday 2nd November 2018, Muscat – 5150. See event details here.
Friday 1st March 2019, Muscat – 70.3. See event details here.
